Start the New Year Right With a Visit to the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Growing up, my family attended a parish named in honor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, so I heard her name multiple times a week, but never understood just how incredible she was until later in life.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is known as the first native-born American saint. Born in 1774 in New York, she married William Seton and had five children. After William died in Italy, Elizabeth was introduced to Catholicism and entered the Church in 1805.

She went on to open a school for girls in Baltimore and later founded the Sisters of Charity in Emmitsburg, establishing the first community of women religious in the United States. Her work became the foundation for the American Catholic school system. She died in 1821 and was canonized in 1975. Today, she is honored as the patron saint of Catholic schools and widows."

In honor of her feast day on January 4th, I invite you to join me on a pilgrimage (either virtual or in-person!) to her National Shrine:

Located in Emmitsburg, Maryland, the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (or Seton Shrine) "offers a breadth of experiences to discover—some reflective, some intriguing, others inspiring, but all deeply rewarding."

Whether you take a guided tour or explore the grounds solo, you will be treated to a one-of-a-kind pilgrimage opportunity, beginning with an inside look at the Stone Farmhouse (where St. Elizabeth founded the Sisters of Charity), old St. Joseph's (where she opened the first girls' school), and St. Joseph Cemetery (the resting place of many of St. Elizabeth's family and friends).

After exploring these sites, pilgrims are invited to the on-site museum, complete with fascinating exhibits and artifacts.

What is a pilgrimage without Mass? Pilgrims are invited to celebrate Mass at the Shrine's on-site Basilica!

Mass at the Basilica is celebrated Monday through Friday at 1:30 pm and Sunday at 11 am and 1:30 pm.

In addition to all of the above, the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton also hosts a Living History tour perfect for families!
