This St. Gregory the Great Church Is As Great As The Saint Himself
It is our last feature of August and one of the last of the summer... where does the time go? In honor of this momentous occasion, we are highlighting one excellent saint whose Feast Day just so happens to be this time of year - St. Gregory the Great:
St. Gregory was born around the year 540 AD in Rome to a wealthy and devout Christian family. Though he had a promising career in public service and even served as Prefect of Rome, he left it behind to become a monk, drawn to a life of prayer and simplicity. In 590, he was elected Pope, becoming one of the most influential leaders in the history of the Church.
As Pope, Gregory focused on reforming the liturgy, supporting missionary work, and caring for the poor. He’s credited with organizing what would later be called Gregorian Chant, and he sent missionaries to convert the Anglo-Saxons in England.
He died in 604 AD and was later declared a Doctor of the Church. His Feast Day is celebrated on September 3rd, making it the perfect time to plan a pilgrimage in his honor:
